Designed by Frederik Roijé, the Breed Retreat is an architectural habitat for chickens, bringing nature back into the urban environment.
Its distinctive construction consists of stacked and fused segments, all interconnected to form one continuous structure. Made from certified wooden rabbet boards, the segments create a sculptural yet functional composition. From the inside, the Breed Retreat is an open and accessible spatial structure, allowing the chickens to move freely between the different levels.
The varying heights are inspired by the natural pecking order of chickens. The second segment features two perches, while each segment is equipped with an opening at the rear, providing easy access for cleaning and collecting eggs.
The Breed Retreat is available in two sizes: the large version accommodates 15–20 bantam chickens, while the small version accommodates 5–10.
Solar panels integrated into the roof power the interior lighting, extending daylight during winter and supporting the chickens’ natural rhythm.
