In collaboration with the Rijksmuseum, Dutch designer Frederik Roijé reinterprets one of Amsterdam’s most recognizable architectural signatures: the canal house.
The Canal Birdhouses distil the characteristic proportions and rhythm of Amsterdam’s historic canal houses into a series of sculptural homes for birds. Rather than reproducing the architecture literally, Roijé reduces it to its essential lines, creating a playful yet precise dialogue between urban architecture and nature.
Made out of weatherproof black coated plywood, while brass details introduce a refined contrast. Their warm, gold-colored finish is a subtle reference to the opulence of the Dutch Golden Age, the period that shaped much of Amsterdam’s historic cityscape.
Produced in the Netherlands by local manufacturers, precise construction and Dutch craftsmanship. A piece of Amsterdam, re-scaled for another inhabitant.
